Description:
Perform technical and specialized work of a moderate grade of skill in connection with chemical and environmental systems, industrial hygiene testing, analysis, detection and repair of defects in related systems, devices and instruments, assist others in making tests, surveys and layout work. Set up, as directed, chemical testing and air monitoring devices necessary for conducting various chemical and industrial hygiene analyses. Be familiar with the operation and maintenance of basic water treating systems, including chemical control, routine testing of effluents, and inventory of bulk chemicals, chlorination and lubrication. Assist in evaluating ventilation systems as directed. Assist in performing sampling studies as assigned. Collect and prepare samples, operate sampling equipment, perform tests requiring the use of basic analytical equipment and the knowledge of common chemical materials. Assist in inspecting turbines, heat exchangers, tanks and other power plant equipment and preparing sketches, inspections and maintenance reports. Record data on equipment operation and conditions for surveys and technical duties. Make required equipment checks and assist in performing tests and preparing related reports, graphs and curves. Be familiar with and assist in checking operations and maintenance projects for compliance with chemical and industrial hygiene standards and specifications. Prepare bulk supplies of chemicals to specific concentration; assist in special analyses and tests necessary to regulate proper chemical treatment of system. Operate truck auto sampler, as directed. This includes visually observing condition of truck coal and sampling accordingly. Obtain coal samples from crushers and pulverizers, determine fineness records and request adjustment of pulverizer rolls and crushers. Adjust pulverizer classifiers to obtain desired coal fineness. Assign sample numbers to individual coal samples and maintain sample records. Keep records of coal samples, change and properly label coal sample containers and transport containers to the Coal Lab. Calibrate coal samplers and perform bias tests of the samplers, as directed. Perform maintenance, as directed, such as cleaning, greasing, adjusting and unplugging of automatic coal samplers, both as-fired and as-received. Clean belt scales. Report maintenance requirements for repairs to coal samplers and related equipment. Observe and report operating status of coal samplers and related equipment. Operate, regulate and adjust soot, ash and pyrite disposal equipment, including associated pumps and valving; check operation of circulating water system, cooling towers, deep well pumps and sump pumps; operate trash rake; operate and clean river revolving screens, including replacement broken shear pins; operate feedwater treatment equipment and back wash filters; operate electrostatic precipitators and other remote equipment, as assigned. Experience Required:
Must be able to pass an examination, if required, and in addition: Must satisfactorily complete, in such time frames as may be established by the company, all required training to advance to the Performance & Industrial Hygiene Technician classification, or vacate the Performance & Industrial Hygiene Technician-Junior classification. Must have a two-year Associate Degree in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, or equivalent. Must have a moderate degree of knowledge and skill necessary to perform work with standard laboratory and chemical analyzing equipment. Must be able to read, interpret and work from simple prints, sketches and specifications. Must be familiar with equipment and clearance procedures, safety practices and current procedures applicable to the work. Must be able to distinguish colors on a standard color blindness test. Must be able to work effectively with other employees and learn to instruct and direct other employees. Must possess the appropriate State driver's license. Must obtain and maintain all necessary certifications and licenses as required. Must have a working knowledge of applicable OSHA and Environmental guidelines. Must have demonstrated the ability to physically and mentally perform work in all areas and heights required.
